Expertise
Matt is a Registered Patent and Trade Marks Attorney and has specialised in Intellectual Property (“IP”) protection since 2005. Before joining IP Gateway, Matt rose to the position of Principal at another of Australia’s leading IP firms.
Matt first entered the Australian patent and trade mark attorney profession after completing both a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours and a Bachelor of Laws with Honours at The University of Queensland. Matt also holds a Masters of Industrial Property Law from the University of Technology, Sydney.
After qualifying and working in Australia as a Registered Patent and Trade Mark Attorney, Matt also spent a number of years working in the London office of one of Europe’s leading patent and trade mark practices. Whilst in London, Matt acted for a number of the world’s largest multidisciplinary electronics, communications and technology companies. He then returned to Australia and joined another leading Australian IP firm in 2011 and was appointed as a Principal there in 2015. Matt then joined IP Gateway in 2019.
In the area of patents, Matt advises and practices in a range of technical fields including transport and mining technologies, wireless communications and telecommunications, security systems, medical and surgical devices, architectural hardware, and also a range of other mechanical, electromechanical and electronic technologies.
Matt’s day to day patent-related work ranges from preparing and processing patent applications to helping manage large patent families and portfolios throughout the world. Matt also regularly assists with commercial matters such as IP sale and licensing, due diligence and documentation recordation, infringement disputes (including assisting with patent litigation), patent oppositions and other contentious issues.
Matt has also worked extensively in the areas of trade marks and branding, including representing leading fashion and consumer goods brands. As part of this, Matt provides advice and services related to trade marking and brand establishment, trade mark portfolio management, branding disputes, and brand-related aspects of due diligence.
